handyman

fixing the shower head today.

so meticulous, handling the equipment with utmost care. something about the intense concentration in his eyes.. the genuine desire to make it all work smoothly. the subtle physical strength, toned and pulsing through the movements. so courteous on one hand, and yet so masculine on the other.

i could go on..

but in one word,

November 19, 2007

and so it ends

albeit on a sweltering hot note.
where was the heat when i needed it?
flies no more!
buzz no more!

the mental, emotional and physical breakdowns..
with the trustworthy golden bowl rescuers, the flyBong combo
decidedly a blessing or a lesson learnt,
depending on which way you look at it

binge-eating..
like you've never eaten before
munch, chomp, shiver with delight,
but mind you, consumed with guilt

breaking the dawn, with the sweat of a pen..
surely, the day will come when i will be one of them
who sashay the swotvac away
alas, a chance no more!

rising to the dreaded alarm..
even though you swore you barely slept 5 minutes ago
fasting on internet, living on V,
thriving on newfound friendships on the table

this is the point of no return..
when sleep beckons, but not taken
at the detriment of the body and soul
but the mind rests yay!

no cobwebs no more isaac?
and yes more procrastination kenny
i think i want a puppy.

learning points

the past two weeks have taught me that:

  • silk undies are the ultimate joys of being a woman/ daughter of a woman.
  • unhealthy amount of long blacks, jasmine tea, dark chocolate and peanut butter pizzas can lead to fantasies of savoury food and revolting repercussions.
  • studying corporate finance comes close to reading a storybook if you exclude the calculations. the kind of book you actually want to finish in one night, but not by choice. of course, the midsem test will allocate an entire section to bloody lease payments which you deliberately skipped. trade-off theory: the benefits of (barely) sufficient sleep + a bedtime story offsets the negative mindblock of understanding the mindless calculations.
  • derivative securities. after skimming through 3 lectures, it suddenly hits you that derivatives = derivation = deriving currents from futures. how could that have skipped you right from the start? and isnt it terminally wrong to call them lecture notes if we are expected to copy notes onto our lecture slides in class?
  • disappointment is the fruit of expectations. you dont even realize you expected something until it doesnt happen. give more, expect less. im still learning.
  • moving three girls' garbage into a new home not found yet is harder than originally thought. perfect timing too.
  • animal grooves. forgive the monkey for her love of bananas, the rat for always scrounging the kitchen for food, the mouse for consuming too much cheese for her own good and the pig for looking like one. funny, dad always called me a fox.
  • general knowledge: ignorance or sheer lack of pursuit?
  • promises.. are going to stay unbroken. a promise to make a picnic happen in Flagstaff Gardens will materialize. even if it's only gonna be me, myself, a book and a beach mat.
  • the carrot breakthrough- could my eyesight possibly be deteoriating concurrently with the decreasing consumption of the orange miracle?
  • beer, cakes, pictures, coffee, sun and rain, material gifts.. intangible treasures of a big girl in pigtails and a lollipop in hand. boo the guards/bouncers who kept requesting for ID! showers of love, insults and ramblings from months of separation. nothing comes close to spending time with the two most precious people in your life.
now on to snapping out of the reverie.. hopefully.

the worthy saturday

who says there are 7 days in a week?

the past 2 weeks flew past in one big jumble of a day. i miss having hour- long breakfasts, and then have another post-breakfast meal up on my comfy chair recharging to the wonders of blog-surfing, food nutrition-surfing, or just surfing in general.

so whenever i have the chance, i try to stay at home for as long as i can.

the problem here is, everyone's amazing ability to delay the books as long as humanly possible. i am no different.

it started with a quick trip to victoria market for fruits.

i came home with hands full of fruits, vegetables, nuts, meat and a new top too thin for winter and too thick for summer. somehow that led to rearranging the fridge (which is no easy feat when you have three food junkies in the house), readjusting the temperature (my cucumber is frozen! it's not light green in the middle anymore, it's translucent-ish), munching on generous dosages of green grapes (how come they're so cheap now anyway? the perfect sweet temptation) and then proceeded to stuff myself further with juicy strawberries and yoghurt (i've tried all flavours possible and i've come to realize strawberry yoghurt does it for me). half an hour later, im having toasted bread with double cheese, frozen cucumber and semi-frozen spicy hommus dip (safeway special! $1.99- but there is preservative inside. a once-off tradeoff for a cheap buy?) .

one day, i'll talk about the joys of grocery-shopping. full-on housewife mode last night. right, studykakis?=]

the next hour or so was spent downloading 20 odd songs just so i could choose one nice ringtone to transfer into my bruised-all-over Sony Ericsson dinosaur. Except i had to transfer at least 10 500kb default ringtones into my labtop just so i could delete them off my phone before there was enough space to put ONE SONG in. bleh. but it is worth it. now, instead of the annoying teriyaki boys blasting that same beat over and over again, i now have melodious, rejuvenating Selah's Bless the Broken Road. Rejoice!

i also have a thing for 'personifying' of my room. despite rearranging/ redecorating/ reorganizing my humble abode a million times over, i keep getting urges to make more changes. hence, today's garbage of pictures is the result of 2 hours of hard work. the pictures make me feel so... at home. this must be some obssessive compulsive disorder i have for visual fulfillment therapy. seeing images everywhere sends me into reveries of my own.

any ideas what i should do wtih the gaping space in the middle?
can you believe i saw someone using that exact umbrella? so hawt. was so tempted to ask where she got it.
the safe haven.
titbits collected during my stay here (includes cards sent from msia too!)
my honey, my sleeping buddy.

and you know how everyone has not been blogging as frequently anymore? i was no different. and the one afternoon i have to redeem the impoverished state of my studies ends up here.

how come i can feel happy while feeling guilty?!!

lx, looks like we'll have to start working on my (lack of) time management again.

im thinking cornflakes with milk.

happy thoughts

reason #1
the weather today is lovelyy!

i stepped out into semi-cold, sunshiney air.
one hour later, violent winds blew through the city.
how good is that?

i love how the wind blows your hair apart.

reason #2
daddy says: "breaking news from CNN Malaysia. your brother passed his driving test."

*yay* i officially have a chauffeur when i get back!

i bet you cant wait to drive me around nick.

reason #3
money matters look slight better=]

why:
- i finally applied for internet banking to keep track of my (exponentially declining) balance.
- i might just have enough money to last me this week.
- i dont have to steal or live off bread, tuna and lettuce!
- i dont have to watch other people drink in bars/clubs and stare forlornly. i can afford ONE drink!

reason #4
the city has stars all over the place! big and small stars peeking out everywhere! pity im missing Christmas in Melbourne.

and the trees are no longer bald. they're green!

reason #5
someone wrote me a beautiful verse in response to my previous bout of emo-ness.

an excerpt;

Let your friends walk with you.
Together, we bask in the warmth of the sun and in the lushness of the park. Behold the glory of Mother Nature.

We have each other, to calm and embrace.

Let your friends boost you up.

Together, we fight the demons of Guilt, Indolence and Avoidance. And let’s not forget, those irritating minions of Gluttony.

We have each other, for power and persistence; for comfort and solace.

You can count on us,
to watch out for you,
to catch you when you fall,
to pick up the pieces, and of course, you.

When you spiral into the depths of despair that no one can understand, we will still be there, right by your side, ready whenever you are.

sweet joyce.. seen here with thomas who alerts me whenever there is a rainbow! hehe.

what would i do without you guys?

reason #6
guess who im seeing real soon?

the cheeky boy!

and the wonder boy!

reason #7
i have succumbed to the world of music-sharing limewire.
having been deprived for a year, i now have a truckload of rejuvenating and party-worthy songs to add on to the list of distractions.

but it's so good on the ears..

..now it's time to hit the audio lectures once more.

November 07, 2006

im living on..

planetshakers.
tea.
coffee.
coffee and cream crackers.
old gold dark chocolate.
lindt's dark chocolate.
lindt's orange intense dark chocolate.
hui ting's cookies.
hui ting's cakes.
hui ting's pizzas.
pocky's.
jellybeans.
orange mandarin jellies.
more tea and coffee.
tim tam quartro.
huge breakfasts.
even huger lunches.
teatime, enourmous dinners, suppers.
chocolate.

i feel a giant belly coming.

HELP!

*gasP* did i just lose my last post? oh my.
i blame the exams.

foxy tales

on the phone last night, daddy dearest dropped a bomb.
" i know what you are. you are a fox."
"i, on the other hand, am a beaver and an owl."

i love his randomness, i love his delightful insights. everytime i talk to him, i'm reminded of why i miss home so much. his quirky and sometimes sick sense of humour makes me happy. his thoughts reflect wisdom gained through years of hardship and determination. i am who i am today because of his unfailing support and strength.

truth is, my dad is the most influential person in my life.

so why am i a fox?
apparently, foxes take things easily, and only do what is required of them when needed to. adaptable, impulsive, and definitely not a planner.
no, nothing about being sly, cunning or sexy foxy. darn.

i looked up the dictionary.
fox
1. a. Any of various carnivorous mammals of the genus Vulpes and related genera, related to the dogs and wolves and characteristically having upright ears, a pointed snout, and a long bushy tail.
b. The fur of one of these mammals.
2. A crafty, sly, or clever person.
3. Slang: A sexually attractive person.
4. Nautical: Small cordage made by twisting together two or more strands of tarred yarn.
5. Archaic: A sword.

foxy fun at the loo

the beaver is a planner. a beaver builds its home for the future. a beaver pops his head up every now and then to survey his surroundings. cautious, organized and alert. the owl makes his catch silently, but surely. a master of its territory, it sees through the tiny loopholes, dark as it may be.

i wonder if the fox can learn to be a beaver/owl someday. the foxerowl in making.

flashing back to what ee lin said in Urban Life, we are governed by our desires and expectations. when we indulge in shopping, MSN, food and the like, it is fuelled by the desire to do so. we expect to come out feeling somewhat better, even if it isnt necessarily for the best of us. if you can channel your desires into something bigger, greater.. He will deliver what you expect.

sigh, chocolate indulgence- the best kind of bad.

tortoise mania

i thought what in the world had happened to inspire 80% of the MSNers online to include tortoises on their names.

i asked jolene, who said it was for steve irwin.

but steve was a crocodile hunter, not tortoise!

to which she said that tortoises are cute and green.

flabbergasted. huh??

and i was truly, truly amazed. all my friends, both near and far, decided to put tortoises on their nicks just for steve irwin? everyone thought the same thing? tortoises? WOW.

and then yin san had to tell me that it was actually a forwarded message sent to everyone to include tortoises/ turtles as a tribute to steve irwin ! rupa-rupanya bukan.

now im not amazed anymore. sigh.

but here's my tribute to steve irwin. although i only watched a few of the crocodile hunter series, he truly was a man of courage and genuine liveliness. the latter, i've to admire. my condolences to his family, and the millions of people whose hearts he touched.

itchy fingers

can actually bring you some good.

what was meant to be an innocent forray into the 'free rainbow blogger skins' google zone turned out to be a full-fledged revamp of sorts. what do you do when you've completely messed up your original template after excessive copy-and-paste sessions? why, you pick a new one of course, to compensate the mistake of your butter internet fingers.

so look what we have here.

waves of thought

despite spending a good number of hours in front of the untalking screen, i realized something today. i am almost computer-illiterate. seriously.

who knew there were so many shortcuts that you could use in Microsoft Word that could have saved me all the time in the world?
no wonder my assignments felt so long to type.
who knew there were other browsers other than internet explorer?
because my pictures stopped loading, i was forced to steal favours from friends just so they could help me upload pictures. i am now a proud user of mozilla, and there have been no problems since.
even then, who knew that you could open multiple tabs under one browser?
thanks kev, for finally enlightening me.
finally, how on earth do you navigate through blog templates?
now you know why i have no links, no personalized deco, no mambo jumbo that i wish i could put into my sidebar. blogging pros, TEACH ME.

idioticity aside, i have learnt so many things in a week.

1. bonds do strengthen through distance. the ocassional daisies sprinkled over the months bring us closer than ever before.

2. i have absolutely no self-discipline. zilch. nothing. food and classes are my greatest failings, ironically. i cant keep my hands (and mouth) off titbits ranging from anything with hints of chocolate to indomie to cream crackers to nutella and peanut butter. i also have an aversion to attending classes. this week's attendance grand total of 0 lectures and 2tutes is just excellent. i may as well inscribe my name on this year's failure list.

3. ViSuaLs make me happy. i have approximately 18 beautiful pictures lighting up my room, and that that's only because i counted the 4 collages as 4. even better is the poster i just bought that says all! "if you want want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain." -dolly parton. it's a simple black poster with a rainbow-coloured umbrella right smack in the middle, and droplets of rain mildly splattered around it.*heart* i so feel the connection.

4. just because you stay off alchohol doesnt mean you can lose weight. grrr, i try.

5. im a sports addict. i want to get my hands dirty with rackets, strength and sweat. i need to get over my fear of walls in squash! next week will tell if the badminton sessions at caulfield work out.

6. im not as homesick as before. true, the heartstrings do get tugged every now and then, but they're not as close to the waterducts near my eyes as compared to last semester. it's a worrying relief.

7. last night's hillsong talk on 'getting involved' struck a chord close to home. we all shy away from inconveniences all the time; be it someone's despair, an annoying phonecall, or just being asked to give up an extra hour of the day. being the selfish humans that we are, we avoid at all costs. sometimes all it takes is that tiny extra effort put in that could brighten someone's day.. or perhaps, change someone's life. and ours in return. im gonna try to 'get involved'.

8. i have three meals a day, no matter what time the start. 3pm: wakes up and eats cereal. 530pm: cooks lunch. 9pm: dinner. 12am: titbit supper. amazing isnt it?

9. i want a foolproof 100% success guaranteed plan on killing procrastination! PLEASE.

10. since i've reached this far, this proves how number 9 has completely failed me. here's to trying again.

edit: 17th august, 0214

because i have not managed to gather all the pics we took at kimchi grandma's that night, here's one for you sue hui! beautiful women age with grace. you'll age gracefully, i know =] happy birthday!

ps- i still have your bday card with me.

silly me

my (lack of) sensibility, punctuality and rationality is proverbial.

original wednesday timetable:

12pm- cm lecture
1pm - aiesec events meeting with jon
3pm - cm tute
4pm - acs tute
5pm - cl lecture

what actually happened:
12pm - missed what i thought was qm2 lecture

135pm - on the tram. Jon: "Melissa, are you coming?"
- heart stops beating. "uhh, for what?"

2pm - replaced qm2 tute that i missed on monday
3pm - acs tute

4pm - checks timetable. "omgosh how come i've another acs tute at 4pm?"

405pm- checks timetable again. "shit i completely missed my cm tute!"

415pm - proceeds to library to type junk. halfway typing... "oh no there was another cl lecture at 4pm that i could have gone for!"

430pm
- proceeds to plan thursday's timetable with extra care.

aghhhhh. the clown in me.

what say you?

If u r an Asian, African or Jewish ...... PLS DON'T BUY ANYTHING From Tommy Hilfiger!!!

*I'm sure many of you watched the recent taping of the Oprah Winfrey show where her guest was Tommy Hilfiger. On the show, she asked him if the statements about race he was accused of saying were true. Statements like "If I'd known African-Americans, Hispanics, Jewish and Asians would buy my clothes, I WOULD NOT have made them so nice. I wish these people would *NOT* buy my clothes, as they are made for upper class white people." His answer to Oprah was a simple "YES". Where after she immediately Asked him to leave her show.

My suggestion? DON'T buy your next shirt or perfume from TommyHilfiger. Let's give him what he asked for. Let's not buy his clothes, let's put him in a financial state where he himself will not be able to Afford the ridiculous prices he puts on his clothes. BOYCOTT. PLEASE SEND THIS MESSAGE TO ANYONE YOU KNOW. If we are small, then send it to the whole community that's not white people and see the result. We have to see the result of unity. Let's find out if Asian and Non-white really play such a small part in the world. Stop buying any range of their product, perfume, cosmetics, clothes, bags, etc., etc.

this was one of those forwarded emails i got from a friend. how true is it?

the recent spate of ponderings among aiesecers surrounding the hype/ support/ prejudice/ acceptance of Asians has got me thinking. i dont know much, but i do know that you can't run away from racism. not here, not back home, not in any part of the world. it's funny, in today's world, being different pays. but at the same time, society repels differences that dont conform to their general environment.

there is a fine line between tolerance and acceptance yes?

i am intrigued.

of fatal disorders

excessive blog-reading disorder

2nd stage. time-consuming. overdramatic. hilarious. bombshells after camwhores after alchoholics. fan clubs. ticklish. deep and shallow, sick and sad. blatant honesty + outrageous thoughts + eroticism = sheer madness. but i'm hooked.

compulsive eating disorder

final stage. weight-threatening. latte tim tam. tim tam monte. dark chocolate tim tam dipped in cinnamon-tinted coffee. green tea, lemon twist, more green tea. then coffee again. biscuits with cheese. mushrooms galore, crunchylickalicious. pods. perfectly boiled eggs (hard whites, soft yellows). apples, oranges.. pears! my first in melbourne, the jackun-ness. cornflakes in yoghurt. melted peanut butter on soy and linseed bread. cherry ice-cream with chocolate flakes.

mia: sweet sour crab with steaming hot mantaos.
venue: kayelle.
time: 22nd june here i come!

mood-swing disorder

ongoing. disturbing. emotionally exhaustive. crazy. obssessive. freaking high, super low. acid bites of distaste. opinions. defensive. unending rounds of punches, if u're unlucky. saccharine sweet if otherwise. self-abusive. tormenting. destroys self-esteem, or whatever that's left of it.

internet-compelling disorder

a complete waste of time. MSN. things out of the blue. easy breakfast recipes. nursery rhymes. healthy eating. melbourne maps. intelligence tests. wallpapers. and screensavers! the addiction! autumn leaves, clocks with hands shaped as an autumn leaf, falling snow, 3D bubbles, loveydovey cupid hearts arrows, zodiac clock, sea life, nature. the excitement of watching the preview of downloaded screensavers, unbeatable.

being laughed at disorder
(this one's stupid and random but it's true and i insist on putting it in)

inspired since primary school. clown. joker. victim of false accusations. eg: melissawani. clumsy. actually, very clumsy. has issues with uneven surfaces, flat grounds, staircases, steps and playgrounds. swings! omgosh i love swings!naive. innocent. bodoh. oblivious to the birds and bees until much too late. ambitious. a dreamer. harboured young ambitions of becoming a queen, or will settle for princess by marrying a prince.

last-minute disorder

common ailment with most students. career-threatening. maybe life-threatening. think japan or korea. if that doesnt help, think of suicidal sprees. requires sponge-like brain for extraordinary absorbing powers. eyebag-prone. repetitive. perpetual. unavoidable. inevitable. stupid, but smart. stupid because it's not smart to push matters to the eleventh hour, smart because if you score it shows that you're not stupid. ha, this is proof of smart stupidity already.

it's 1.11am.

11 is my favourite number.

21 is supposed to be my lucky number.

1.11am.

what time is badminton tomorrow?!

consolidations.

HELP!

June 08, 2006

intelligence

it was a groggy morning, considering the lack of sleep. praying that a tram would come soon, i hopped onto the next one, and promptly set the finance notes on my lap. my last round of revision, 30minutes before time. the tram was half-full, and i mindlessly held my wallet in my hands, should the need arise for my to validate my ticket. next stop, william's street. in my mind, i was reasoning out why the riskfree interest rate gives value to call options. Next thing i knew, "Scuse me, can I see your ticket please?"

6th of june 2006. 060606.

my first tram fine, before my very first exam, and my very first time at the royal exhibition building.

moving on- 2 down, 2 more to go.

extreme procrastinators have a distorted view of exams. they cannot decide whether it's a good thing that the major component for assessment lies in that one final paper (which means there's not much reason to study during the semester), or that it's generally bad because they still have to cram everything in at the very last minute.

are exams actually a good measure of intelligence? if you think so, think again.

Multiple intelligences(1983) have been discovered by Howard Gardner:

Linguistic - The word player
Logical / Mathematical - The questioner
Visual / Spatial - The visualiser
Musical - The music lover
Bodily / Kinaesthetic - The mover
Interpersonal - The socialiser
Intrapersonal - The loner
Naturalistic - The nature lover

which one are you? http://www2.bgfl.org/bgfl2/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks3/ict/multiple_int/questions/choose_lang.cfm

on a completely unrelated note, shau fun (in white) turned 20 recently!

as always, we gave each other some boobybootyluvv..

June 02, 2006

pre-exam havoc

i am going to be like the rest of the world and RANT.

i am intelligence dehydrated.
i am so tired my eyes have gone past the droopy stage. it has now become deformed slits with heavy eyebags emphasizing the impact of terrible sleeping hours.
i am fat.
i am stupid.
i am annoyed.
my brain is overworked, and there is not enough cells to go around.
i feel like humpty dumpty.
my hands and feet are perpetually cold, but it has become so normal that i dont realize it anymore.
finance is torture.
exams are torture.
food is always a welcome retreat, but for all the wrong reasons.
did i mention i put on FIVE KG?!
i am currently not sane.
in fact, i will not be sane till another few weeks.
the thought of going to the airport alone is kinda daunting.
im such a pussy, i know.
to add on to that list, i am a lousy crammer. i have degraded myself to the point of no return, where understanding theories escapes me, and mathematical calculations makes no blardy sense.
frustration is an understatement.
i walked home in fear and aching leg muscles tonight.
yes, there were possums smiling at me.
no, i had no food.
admittedly, i was paranoid as usual. but that has already become me.
see what exams do to me?

randoms

~ i had my first exam today!

it was pouring cats & dogs and we had to wait outside Wilson Hall with our upturned umbrellas barely keeping us cover from the rain. but twas fun, in a masochistic way. having to freeze your hands off while seeing droplets of rain roll down the faces of many, and worry about the lack of warm brain cells to save the accounts paper, and feel half annoyed and amused that it had to rain half an hour before exam started. the weather can make or break your day! despite the horrifying paper, i think it made mine.

~ my bracelet of pink pearls has gone missing.

sob. the worst thing is, it has been missing in action for awhile now.. and i never realized it until recently.

~ my dad is the sweetest man on earth.

even sarah thinks so. ya girl? hehe. while complaining that i put him through the unnecessary task of sending my uni books over, he quietly inserted soft toys and picture frames from my room into the package as well. i was almost moved to tears.

~ i have an eating disorder.

what was previously a '2hours without food=gastric' has now become an 'every hour food craze'. i had a grand total of 7 pieces of bread today, and i dont think it even counts for lunch. i also have a continuous supply of pods, biscuits, cadbury and more pods. some find comfort in eating. i think i' m gonna break the scale. soon.

~ either the washing machine or dryer doesnt like me.

an elle gym pants and pink slacks shrunk, making me look stunted. a few tops have decided to dump me, and go for tummy-showing outfits. hanging my clothes out on the balcony is scary, because there are two pigeons learning how to fly, when they havent even learnt their toilet manners. i would like to think that they're siblings- the black one, the older brother, and the brown one, his younger sister, but i'll never know.

~ i actually brought a diary here but have never used it

i even wrapped it in midnight blue wrapping paper with all the star signs nicely printed on it, but it's been left alone in my drawer for some time. i blame this blog.

~ missing home is so engraved in me that i cant even tell whether it's there.

i miss my pa, ma, bro, chester& russell to bits. i miss my bed, and my bolster. i miss the other half of my clothes left behind. i miss the help bunch, because sparks like them somehow cannot be found here. i miss my dahlings, who are scattered all over the world. i miss you. i miss wasting time anywhere at all in Malaysia, and not worry about the cost.

i think i should go home in june.

delusions

things take a 360 degrees turn sometimes.

when you find yourself fighting a losing battle, you know you're in for it. what do you do, continue fighting for what you always thought was right? or hold up that little white flag, and retreat back into your shell? either way, you lose. the stab is acute, the whiff of its pain hangs solemnly in the air. what can you do? perhaps there is more room for comfort in the pit you dug for yourself.

when you finally open up, even your innermost thoughts and well-kept secrets can turn their back on you. how do you retaliate against the unbreaking strength of verbal swords? the hit is brutally direct, driving a force straight to the heart. a punching bag, that's what you are. punched when needed, left alone to heal after the rounds.

Two weeks back, two little bundles of joy greeted me with their unmistakable baby squeaks and stumpy clumped-together feathers. what had at first seemed like a pleasant surprise turned into horror-filled amazement at the rate shit seemed to cover every inch of the balcony floor.

the growing culprits...

nestling snugly in their self-proclaimed home.
